Vagina diamond.

Hello onlookers! It was a crazy week, mostly entertaining company, seeing Quiet Life and Titles rock CT on Friday then went to Northampton, MA for Festival Ecstatique which brought many highlights, including meeting the folks from the Heartworm and Green Panda Press and seeing J Mascis shred on an acoustic guitar running through numerous pedals for like 10 minutes straight. Have you heard that new Dinosaur Jr record by the way? I knew it’d be good, but holy shit it is awesome. I wanted to strike up a chat about him shredding on Beachwood Sparks’ legendary opus “Once We Were Trees”, but I decided to put my fandom back in my pocket and depart for Connecticut.

Also picked up some vinyl at Dynamite Records, a shop I remember finding in NoHo randomly a couple years back but had trouble finding again. Not this time however, and it was wonderful. I went twice and came back with Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey”, David Crosby’s “If I Could Only Remember My Name”, Francoise Hardy’s “Greatest Hits” and Crosby Stills Nash & Young’s “Deja Vu”. All sound like (vegan) butter.

Via Audio in Connecticut tomorrow with hype machine My Brightest Diamond. Also, something is cooking up (get excited but not TOO excited) that will hopefully pop up this week or early next week.  Stoked. Today’s art is something I found on Google images while looking for a photo reference diamond. Killer.

Off to enjoy a brand new King Of the Hill. Hank is making friends with the hippies at the co-op grocery store.  So good.

Lusitania.

Still not an official post yet, so this is part 1.5. Art above by Pink Teeth hero Japayork. Artist, killer musician and wonderful chap. Now THAT’S a package!

The internet & music world has been providing some wonderful things as of late. Like…

  • Neko Case’s article “My Flaming Hamster Wheel of Panic About Publicly Discussing Poetry in This Respected Forum” in Poetry Magazine. The text can be read here.
  • Carrie Brownstein (ex Sleater-Kinney) has a blog on NPR that is quicky becoming the greatest blog EVER. Highlights include her most recent entry, which breaks down Curb Your Enthusiasm in the more brilliant way ever, and “Our Sophisticated Tastes Betray Us”, which really should just be read and not summed up. Once you read them, let’s talk. Email info@pinkteeth.com or IM me at “pinkteethrecords” with your thoughts. Oh yeah, you can find the blog, titled “Monitor Mix”, right here.
  • Jason Anderson has been doing a song a day (though mostly he gives 2 and sometimes 4) on his myspace. Somehow (though not surprisingly) they’re all gold. Find those here. If you haven’t yet, buy “Tonight” from our friends at ECA Records, it’ll be one of the best decisions you could ever hope to make.
  • Bullion did some math with “Pet Sounds” and the legend J Dilla and came up with “Pet Sounds: In the Key Of Dee”. It’s a pure party with old friends. Download the whole thing for free right here. Word.

Tomorrow, for real. Shit has been crazy busy. It doesn’t mean I don’t love you lovers.

You are art.

4:31 pm November 12th, 2007

Hello loved ones. Sorry for the lengthy absence from the world of blogging, there was much to do and much more coming up. This is part one, part two coming either later tonight or sometime tomorrow.

This weekend, there is a poetry/music festival of sorts happening in beautiful Northampton, MA. Pink Teeth will be in attendance, giving out poems, photos, art, cd-r mixes/samplers, buttons and more. Email info@pinkteeth.com if you want to send me some stuff to hand out to promote your art. I want to help everyone. Hoping to make some good contacts from this, and if you’re in the New England area COME! If you can make it to somewhere between Falls Village, CT and Northampton, I will even give you a ride. This is the most exciting thing to happen to New England in quite sometime.

Here is the info, copied and pasted from the folks at Heartworm Press:

6:52 pm November 5th, 2007

That Velvet Teen sure did rock. Setlist, in no order:

  • Noi Boi (opener)
  • 333
  • Rhodekill
  • Radiapathy
  • Flicking Clint
  • (new song)
  • Caspian Can Wait
  • Tokyoto
  • Building A Whale (closer)

The Judah/Casey/Matthew lineup was quite different and sounded VERY evil. Loved it though, the way “Noi Boi” came out especially. They need to put that gem to tape asap. Nice to finally meet everyone, as I’ve been doing stuff for them and Slowdance for many years, and been a fan for a smidgen longer. Can’t believe I actually pulled it off, although on the way home on the Mass Pike my rear tire blew out. So I changed that at 3 in the morning: rad. I couldn’t help but think that the powers that be were a little late in stopping me! Fuck yeah, I beat the system! Thanks to Gleni for being my show buddy.

Thinking about going to the city to catch Casiotone again, but I think I might just take it easy for a bit, catch up on some work. Let me know if you’d like to hang.

Also, starting tomorrow for 11 days, watch the Range Life Records site. Myself and the usual gang of brilliant artists and hopefully some new faces will contribute some gold along the way, to support the release of Dri’s “Smoke Rings”, out tomorrow. Word.

2:04 pm November 3rd, 2007

The flyer says it all, except Cale canceled which blows. So come hang out! Say hello, this is like the big CT Pink Teeth appearance! Support Titles, they’re one of (if not) the best Connecticut band and all really nice dudes. Fun fact: the first Titles show was in my basement. Nifty!

Tomorrow, follow me to Boston and see the Velvet Teen at the Middle East (upstairs sucka, more room!) . Excited about that, because they’re like one of my all time favourite bands. Really digging the new Say Hi record that comes out next year, so I’m stoked to catch them. Hopefully they’re as good as that lp!

And that brings a long week and a longer weekend to a close. I’ll be back Monday to blog again, hopefully with good news on these shows!

The wolf’s jacket is too large.

6:24 pm November 1st, 2007

New songs in the player: Bruhder’s new top 20 hit and a jam from the upcoming vinyl release of Quiet Life’s “Act Natural”, as well as a new one page, with a look at a tote bag design we’re using, thanks to our old friend Matt at Le milieu visuel. Check it all out at pinkteeth.com.

The above image comes from Joana Linda, one of my new favourite artists. Check out her website with stellar photos and more right here, and all of her brilliant videos at her Youtube page (including the stellar new music video for Marissa Nadler).

Via Audio is leaving for tour this weekend, I’ll post the dates tomorrow. Word.

Enjoy the night all you beautiful babies.

Casiotone For the Painfully Alone Halloween.

1:11 pm October 31st, 2007

I wanted to hold off on super gushing over Casiotone For the Painfully Alone until Saturday, when I am seeing him (or them, don’t know if it’s full band or not), but the flawless Daytrotter posted an encore session from CFTPA, with backing band the Donkeys. I would just leave it be, but mother fucker went ahead and played my favourite song he wrote, “New Year’s Kiss”. Apparently he says people think it sounds like a Pavement song. I don’t see it, but I loves me some Pavement so it’s entirely possible. So check all of that out here, it’s wonderful as always.

If you’re unfamiliar with “Etiquette” standout “New Year’s Kiss”, here is an mp3: Casiotone For the Painfully Alone - New Year’s Kiss.

Speaking of Daytrotter, sometime in November the Via Audio session should pop up. Stoked. Speaking of Pink Teeth, look for a digital ep from our friends in It’s a King Thing in the next couple of weeks. Still stoked.

Happy Halloween! I think I’m taking it easy tonight, due to low funds and a huge weekend of activities taking me to 3 different states, but go out and have fun. Seems like you can find your friends playing a show in any state tonight. Or just have a pint with a buddy. Can’t top that. I’ll just watch the tele, enjoying all the old school Halloween episodes of my favourite shows, maybe go out for a pint later on or even get some work done. Low key is my favourite of keys.

A look back (but with an English accent).

7:37 pm October 29th, 2007

As 2007 ages closer to it’s death, I (as a music nerd) find myself compiling various mental “best of” lists. Doing so, I wonder what am I forgetting?

It was an interesting year in general, and it seems like a lot of the goodies came out early on. Here are some I’ve been getting into again:

  • The New Trust “Dark Is The Path Which Lies Before Us” (Slowdance)
  • David Vandervelde “The Moonstation House Band” (Secretly Canadian)
  • Menomena “Friend and Foe” (Barsuk)
  • Tom Brosseau “Grand Forks” (Loveless)
  • Dr. Dog “We All Belong” (Park the Van)
  • Trans Am “Sex Change” (Thrill Jockey)
  • Helms “Secret Doors” (Plants & Brains)
  • Loney, dear “Loney Noir”(Sub Pop)
  • Grinderman “s/t” (Anti)
  • Rio En Medio “Bride Of Dynamite” (Gnomonsong)
  • Laakso “Mother Am I Good Looking?” (V2)
  • The Berg Sans Nipple - Along the Quai (Team Love)
  • Deerhoof - Friend Opportunity (Kill Rock Stars)
  • Jana Hunter “There Is No Home” (Gnomonsong)
  • Joanna Newsom “The Ys Street Band” (Drag City)
  • The Fucking Champs “IV” (Drag City)
  • Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin “seven inch” (Polyvinyl)
  • The Avett Brothers “Emotionalism” (Reckless)

Which is like up to mid-07. There’s tons more. Plus all the great reissues and old jams newly discovered (all the Eccentric Soul collections, Neil Young “Live At Massy Hall 1971). It’s been nice re-listening to these gems, because it’s like looking at an old friend all grown up. Check those out, if you haven’t heard any of them.

Am I missing anything? What did you dig on?

Why did I drink so much last night?

4:00 pm October 28th, 2007

Whilst the really nice folks in Fourth Of July have written many a relateable jam in their day, I always find myself listening to “Why Did I Drink So Much Last Night?” when hungover. I seem to wake up and instantly have it in my head, while trying to keep focus on the real world in my eyes.

Nothing else going on, the weekend was fun, today being the painful exception. There isn’t much on the tele other than a “Goosebumps” marathon on Cartoon Network. What a delightfully cheese program, though one wonders if it is the show or the source material it stems from that contains more dairy?

Be careful friends. Mostly with alcohol consumption, jeeeeez.

This week: make and mail vegan cookies to 2 parties, Brooklyn for Halloween with new ally Quincy Quartz, New Haven for Casiotone For the Painfully Alone/Cale Parks, Boston for The Velvet Teen, plan out Lawrence visit, smile.
